Table of Contents
In sex talk, DP almost always means double penetration: two body openings penetrated at the same time, or one opening with two things. PIV is simpler. It stands for penis-in-vagina, the plain term for vaginal intercourse.
Those two are only the start. Dating profiles, forums and adult ads lean on a whole shorthand of letters, and many of them came out of sex-work listings. This glossary defines ten of the most searched: DP, DVP, PIV, BBJ, CBJ, DATY, DFK, QV, ANR and AA.
Several have more than one meaning. DP is also a profile photo, and BBJ is also a private jet. Where an act carries a real health risk, you will find a short, practical note on lowering it.
All 10 abbreviations at a glance
Here is the quick version. Each term gets a fuller, plain-language entry further down the page.
| Abbreviation | Stands for | What it means | Other common meaning | Health note below? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DP | Double penetration | Two openings penetrated at once, or one opening with two things | Display picture, a profile photo | Yes |
| DVP | Double vaginal penetration | Two insertions in the vagina at the same time | None in wide use | Yes |
| PIV | Penis-in-vagina | Vaginal intercourse | Personal Identity Verification, a US government ID card | Yes |
| BBJ | Bare blow job | Oral sex on a penis without a condom | Boeing Business Jet | Yes |
| CBJ | Covered blow job | Oral sex on a penis with a condom | None in wide use | Yes |
| DATY | Dining at the Y | Oral sex on a vulva, also called cunnilingus | None in wide use | Yes |
| DFK | Deep French kissing | Passionate kissing with tongues | None in wide use | Yes |
| QV | Quick visit | A short booking with an escort | q.v. (“which see”) in reference writing | No |
| ANR | Adult nursing relationship | Consensual breastfeeding between adult partners | Joking use for clingy affection | Yes |
| AA | No settled sexual meaning | Ask what the person means | Alcoholics Anonymous | No |
Two patterns stand out. A “B” for bareback means no condom, and a “C” for covered means a condom is used. And context decides everything: the same letters can be sexual in one chat and harmless in the next.
Penetration terms: DP, DVP and PIV
DP: double penetration, and a much more common everyday meaning
Used about sex, DP means double penetration. Red Book, a sexual health resource written by sex workers for sex workers, defines it broadly. It can mean two body openings penetrated at once, which may involve two people. It can also mean one opening penetrated by two things together. The openings involved may include the mouth, vagina or anus.
Outside sex, DP usually means something else entirely. On social media and messaging apps it most often stands for “display picture,” the profile photo next to your name. So if someone comments on your DP on WhatsApp, they almost certainly mean your photo. The same two letters also stand for data processing, down payment and a double pole switch in other fields, which is a reminder that context does most of the work.
The word around the letters usually settles it. “Nice DP” in a group chat is about a picture. DP listed next to other sexual terms in a profile or ad is about the act.
DVP: double vaginal penetration
DVP narrows the idea down to one opening. It means two insertions in the vagina at the same time. Pleasure School, a sex-education site, describes it as needing even more coordination and preparation than other forms of DP. That guide also calls for more warm-up and generous amounts of body-safe lubricant.
PIV: penis-in-vagina sex
The letters PIV stand for penis-in-vagina, and the term is generally used as another way of saying vaginal intercourse. The term is especially common in radical feminist writing. It also turns up in escort and client glossaries, so it is not limited to one community.
People also use the phrase “no PIV” to describe a relationship or a contraceptive choice. One sexual health service lists replacing PIV with other kinds of sex as a way to avoid pregnancy. Any act where a bare penis touches the vagina can lead to pregnancy, and PIV is the most direct of them. It gets its own health note below.
Oral sex terms: BBJ, CBJ and DATY
BBJ: usually oral sex without a condom
Among adult slang terms, BBJ usually means a bare blow job, which is oral sex on a penis without a condom. Sex-work glossaries more often spell it BBBJ, short for bare back blow job, and give the same meaning. “Bareback” is the key word. In this shorthand it means no condom.
The letters are not reliable on their own, though. User-submitted entries on Urban Dictionary also list “birthday blow job” as a reading. Outside sex, BBJ is the name of the Boeing Business Jet, a line of airliners fitted out as private VIP aircraft for corporate, government and private use. It is also the airport code for Bitburg in Germany. If you see BBJ on an aviation forum, nobody is talking about sex.
CBJ: the covered, condom-on version
CBJ is the covered version. It stands for covered blow job, meaning oral sex on a penis with a condom on. The glossary on Tryst, an escort listing site, uses the same definition, describing it as a blowjob with protection.
The pairing of BBJ and CBJ matters because the two letters signal different levels of infection risk. That difference is explained in the health notes further down.
DATY: shorthand for cunnilingus
DATY stands for dining at the Y. It means oral sex on a vulva, the outer genitals. The clinical word for this is cunnilingus.
DATY sits in the same service lists as BBBJ and DFK. So when it appears in a profile, it reads as sex-work or hookup shorthand rather than casual slang.
Kissing, booking and kink terms: DFK, QV, ANR and AA
DFK: deep French kissing
DFK means deep French kissing, which Red Book describes as passionate kissing with tongues. It is the least explicit term on this list. Even so, it is a standard entry in escort glossaries such as Tryst’s. In a dating profile it simply signals that someone enjoys that kind of kissing.
QV: a quick visit
QV stands for “quick visit” and comes from the same escort glossaries. Unlike most entries here, it names a kind of visit rather than a sexual act. It tells you about the length of a meeting, and nothing about what happens during it.
ANR: adult nursing relationship
ANR stands for adult nursing relationship. Slang.org describes it as a fetish or kink involving consensual adult breastfeeding. In practice, one partner produces breast milk and shares it with the other by breastfeeding. Some people induce lactation on purpose for this.
Rolling Stone’s reporting on these couples adds an important point. For many of them there is a sexual side, but adult nursing relationships are not strictly sexual. Some simply enjoy the closeness of nursing while cuddling. The same arrangement is also called an adult breastfeeding relationship.
AA: no settled adult meaning
AA is the one term here without a clear sexual definition. It does not appear in Red Book’s list of sex-work abbreviations at all. In general use, A.A. is the abbreviation for Alcoholics Anonymous, a program for people with a drinking problem.
There is a near neighbour that does have a fixed meaning. Red Book lists A-level as anal sex, which some listings also call Greek. No source we checked lists AA in that sense, so do not assume the two are linked. If AA appears in a sexual context and the meaning matters to you, ask. Guessing is how people end up agreeing to something neither of them meant.
Why these abbreviations exist, and why you should ask before assuming
Many of these letters were not invented on dating apps. Several, including BBBJ, CBJ, DATY, DFK and QV, are standard in sex-work and escort listings. Red Book explains that such abbreviations shortcut the description of sex-work services. Escort platforms such as Tryst publish their own glossaries of the terms.

The catch is that shorthand drifts. Red Book notes that there are many variations, and that the list it gives covers only common ones. BBJ and BBBJ are a good example. So are the different readings of DP and AA covered above.
That is why the most useful advice on this page comes from sex workers themselves. Red Book tells its readers not to assume a client shares their understanding of an abbreviation. Instead, it suggests confirming the details in plain words before agreeing to anything.
The same rule works for anyone. If a partner or match uses a term you do not know, ask what they mean. If you use one, be ready to explain it. Plain words take a few seconds longer and remove the guesswork.
Health notes for the terms that carry real risk
Several of these terms describe acts that can pass on infections or lead to pregnancy. None of the notes below are a reason for shame. They are the basics a sexual health clinic would want you to know.
Anal penetration (part of most DP) and HIV
The most common form of DP combines vaginal and anal penetration, according to Pleasure School. Anal penetration carries a real HIV risk. The CDC says either partner can get HIV during anal sex. The receptive partner, often called the bottom, is more likely to get it than the insertive partner. Condoms and medicine that prevents HIV both lower that risk.
DP and DVP often add another factor: more than one partner. Healthline’s guide to DP points out that in a group, one or more people is likely to be a new partner. It recommends discussing STI status and agreeing on barrier methods before anything starts. The same guide advises agreeing on pregnancy prevention too. Any DP or DVP that puts a penis in the vagina carries the same pregnancy risk as PIV.
Pain and injury in DP and DVP
The risk that belongs to DP and DVP themselves is physical. Pleasure School says thrusting should be coordinated and gentle, because rapid, out-of-sync motion can be painful or even harmful. It advises starting slow and using fingers or smaller toys to prepare first. That is also why the DVP guidance stresses lube: more stretch and more friction raise the chance of soreness. Pain is a signal to slow down or stop, not something to push through.
Oral sex with no barrier (BBJ, DATY)
Many sexually transmitted infections spread through oral sex, according to the CDC. These include syphilis and gonorrhea, and an infection can sit in the throat and the genitals at the same time. That is the real difference between a BBJ and a CBJ. A condom on the penis, or a dental dam over the vulva or anus, lowers the risk of giving or getting an STI.
For oral sex on a penis, the CDC suggests a non-lubricated latex condom, or a polyurethane one if either partner is allergic to latex. A dental dam is a thin latex or polyurethane sheet placed between the mouth and the vulva or anus. The CDC advises using a new one every time. On HIV specifically, the CDC says oral sex carries little to no risk, although a gonorrhea or chlamydia infection in the throat might make HIV easier to catch.
Moving between body openings
Switching between openings can spread infection. Pleasure School advises changing condoms, or cleaning toys thoroughly, before switching from anal to vaginal penetration. This matters most for DP, where two openings are involved at once.
PIV and pregnancy
Of all the terms here, PIV is the one most directly tied to pregnancy. Sperm can be released before ejaculation as well as during it, so pre-ejaculate can enter the vagina if bare genitals touch. Pulling out early does not remove that risk. Avoiding PIV is not a complete safer-sex plan either: STIs still spread through body fluids, shared toys and skin contact.
Kissing (DFK) and breast milk (ANR)
One concern with deep kissing is cold sores. The World Health Organization says the herpes virus type that causes cold sores, HSV-1, mostly spreads through oral contact. WHO advises anyone with symptoms of oral herpes to avoid oral contact with others, including oral sex. Herpes can still pass on when no sores are visible, so a clear-looking mouth is not a guarantee.
For ANR, the point to know is that breast milk is a body fluid. The CDC lists breast milk among the fluids that can carry HIV. So partners in an adult nursing relationship need the same testing conversation as in any other intimate relationship that shares body fluids.
Consent comes before any abbreviation
An abbreviation in a profile is not consent. Planned Parenthood defines consent as actively agreeing to be sexual with someone, and sex without it is sexual assault. Its short checklist spells FRIES. Consent is freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic and specific.

Two parts of that list matter most for this glossary. “Specific” means agreeing to one act is not agreeing to another, so saying yes to DFK says nothing about DP. “Reversible” means anyone can change their mind at any point, even partway through. Planned Parenthood also notes that people who are drunk, high or passed out cannot consent.
Acts with several people, such as DP, need more planning. Healthline’s guide suggests talking through exactly what everyone wants beforehand and choosing a safe word. One option it describes is a stoplight system, where “yellow” means slow down. It also suggests a nonverbal signal for moments when someone cannot speak.
Frequently asked questions
What is a DP in a relationship?
Usually, nothing sexual. In everyday messaging, DP most often means display picture, the profile photo on apps like WhatsApp. A partner asking you to change your DP wants a new photo. In a sexual conversation, or next to other adult terms, DP means double penetration. Read the surrounding words, and ask if you are unsure.
What does DVP mean in the context of sex?
DVP stands for double vaginal penetration. It means two insertions in the vagina at the same time. It is a narrower form of DP. Like other forms of DP, it calls for extra warm-up, plenty of lubricant and clear agreement from everyone involved.
What does PIV mean in slang?
PIV means penis-in-vagina, the plain term for vaginal intercourse. It is common in radical feminist writing and also appears in escort glossaries. “No PIV” describes choosing other kinds of sex instead, sometimes as a way to avoid pregnancy.
What does CBJ stand for?
CBJ stands for covered blow job. That means oral sex on a penis with a condom on. The condom is the point of the term. It lowers the risk of passing on infections such as gonorrhea and syphilis, which can spread through unprotected oral sex.
What does BBJ mean in text messaging?
Sent in a sexual text, BBJ usually means a bare blow job, oral sex without a condom. Some people use it for “birthday blow job” instead. In aviation, the same letters mean Boeing Business Jet. If the meaning is unclear and it matters, ask rather than guess.
The short version
DP usually means double penetration in sex talk and display picture everywhere else. PIV is penis-in-vagina sex. The rest of the list follows a few simple rules. A B for bareback means no condom, and a C for covered means one is used. Some letters, like AA, have no fixed sexual meaning at all.
When a term matters, ask what the other person means and answer in plain words yourself. Pair any act that carries risk with protection that fits it, such as condoms, dental dams or HIV prevention medicine. And treat every abbreviation as a starting point for a conversation, never as a substitute for consent.
